Q. What needs to be done if

the pool is more than 10 years old?

• Replace sand with new filter medium

  • ie: Zeolite which filters to 1 micron compared to sand 15 microns

  • Some filters install over 10 years ago may not be compatible with todays pumps flow rates, which can cause laterals to brake and inefficiency  in filtration.

• Diatomaceous Earth Filter –

  • This uses a substance known as DE (fossilized skeletons of micro organisms). It traps dirt and Algae as tiny as 5 microns

• Sand Filter

  • Traps between 200 and 100 microns at first

  • As more particles are trapped the filter gets tighter and thus more is trapped

  • When the pressure rises to 9PSI back flush the dirt out?

  • Some councils will not approve De filters as they say that the powder can clog up their sewer lines.

• Cartridge Filter

  • Most common for spas and above ground pools

  • Properly sized and maintained the cartridge will last between 3& 5 years

  • It collects particles about the same level as a sand filter

  • When the pressure rises above 100 PSI, remove it hose it thoroughly, then replace it.

  • Cartrdige filter should be given a special bath every 6 months to prolong its life
